Black African ebony is a traditional wood used for centuries in musical instruments making. Due to its acoustic and mechanical properties, ebony is mainly used as a fingerboard. The best quality black ebony usually comes from Western Africa, unfortunately due to many years of cutting off these trees and the lack of a proper plantation balance, the wood is more and more difficult available and more expensive. Hard sounding and fast-rising ebony sounds are highly valued by jazz musicians, heavy metal musicians, guitar shreders, and by musicians wishing to have a universal, classic instrument, especially if the ebony fingerboard is composed together with a mahogany neck and body. Currently black ebony is not completely uniform black, it has gray or brown streaks and discolorations. Often, violin makers and instrument makers use dedicated dyes to make it totally black. The top-grade piece of long-seasoned natural black ebony for a fingerboard can be very expensive. The wood is very heavy, very hard, compact-scructured, virtually free of pore, abrasion resistant, and performs well in stringed instruments. After final sanding (can also be polished) is very nice, velvet to touch, "quick". Black African ebony is a demanding, but lively and grateful wood.
