*** - the highest quality in a sort, very often it means a wood blank is the AAA grade. Wood for guitar fingerboard, without any defects (unless the description of a specific blank states otherwise), mostly medium-high or high density, mostly dark or intensive in colour, mostly straight or little curved fiber runs along the blank and/ or tide ring spaces. *** quality blanks are clearly better quality than ** in a sort, and they are intended for the most demanding players or instrument makers, for top quality and premium instruments

** - medium quality in a sort, very often it means a wood blank is the AA grade. Wood for guitar fingerboard, without any defects in most cases (unless the description of a specific blank states otherwise), mostly medium or high density, mostly medium-dark colour , mostly stright or wavy fiber runs along a material, wider spaces between rings than in *** quality blanks. ** quality blanks are clearly better quality than * – basic or low quality blanks, and they are the most commonly chosen for fingerboards, because of the good quality – to – price ratio

* - basic or low quality in a sort, very often it means a wood blank is the A or B grade. Wood for guitar fingerboard, can have some defects (marked on a blank or notted in a description of a specific blank), mostly lower density (than **, ***) and/ or lighter colour and/ or curved/ irregular fiber runs along the blank. *- basic or low quality purpleheart fingerboard blanks, which  we offer, are intended for musical instruments for less demanding players or instrument makers. This is not the wood for DIY woodwork, all the pieces have proper tone and technical properties, even if they do not look very pretty. Some *Q pieces are really good, it is worth spending some time to find something at a good price

Other names: Amaranth, Purpleheart, Violet wood

As its name implies, Purpleheart, or Amaranth, has a distinctive purple/amaranth colour that over time turns into a brownish / chocolate colour, but with the hue of this distinctive violet. If you want to maintain intense violet color, use UV-stabilized lacquers. It is one of the hardest and strongest species of wood on the Earth. In addition, it is resistant to water and moisture, no lacquering against moisture is required. Because of its high density / weight, it can not be used on most part of portable instrument, we certainly do not recommend using it as the main wood for a body, but as a thin top or fingerboard, it should be excellent. It also works as a contrasting veneer in laminate construction due to its stiffness and / or color. Machining will cause a lot of trouble, but the final effect will certainly not go unnoticed. We do not recommend the amaranth wood for the first guitar, but for the next one… – big yes.

Sound... purpleheart is something like ebony + rosewood: a lot of warm bass, a lot of hard strong middle tones, clean and sparkly high tones.
