Other names: Sugar Maple, Hard Maple, Rock Maple
Sugar maple grows naturally mainly in the northern/eastern regions of North America. If anyone suspects that maybe from this maple ... Exactly, the tasty maple syrup is the product made from the sap of this variety of maple, as a result of boiling and evaporation of water. It's already delicious, and how does sugar maple work in instruments? It works brilliantly, which can be seen and heard in thousands of guitars, basses and in other wonderful sound generators. This wood is called "No. 1" for necks, used in instruments for decades. Technically ... hard, strong, predictable, stable and stiff. Sonically ... hard-sounding, it emphasizes high frequencies, harmonically rich, introduces a lot of its own positive components to the sound, which makes it lively/musical, and well liked by a whole lot of guitarists, bassists, and musicians playing all kinds of other instruments. The second, commonly used element in the instrument, which is made of maple, is of course the body top. This is to even out the sound character of the instrument (e.g. body and neck made of mahogany) and introduce a positive visual aspect (maple does not have to be wavy, curly, birdseye or non-standard to bring additional beauty to the instrument). Full bodies in guitars and basses are rarely made of maple, due to its heavy weight and too high proportion of hard-high sounds, but this is only a schematic view, there are excellent exceptions. Those who like lacquered and/or light-in-colour fingerboards also use maple for the fingerboard, which sounds similar to ebony here. One of the most universal sounds, positively universal and harmonically rich, gives a combination of mahogany (body) with maple (neck) and rosewood (fingerboard). This is our opinion, but you can also see many companies and people creating instruments, which think the same. To be clear, sugar maple is a hard type of maple (average density approx. 715 kg/m3), and sycamore maple (average density approx. 615 kg/m3), also commonly used in instruments, is a soft maple (don’t be fooled by the name, soft maples are hard, nearly as hard as hard maple), both of which have similar sound qualities . Each variety of maple wood must be protected against weather conditions with lacquer, oil or wax, because maple does not like moisture and changes in climatic conditions. Sugar maple is also on our personal “superwood” list.
